Julia Kohlhaas is a conceptual, multidisciplinary artist originally from Tiamana, Germany, based since 2012 in Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

Driven to create immersive, time-based, side specific works that have the celebration of immediate interaction between humans at heart, her research-based practice includes explorations of realms surrounding cultural identity and legacies as well as non-linear concepts of time and memory. Within her works she is striving to find visual languages that open conversations about existing political, social, and cultural concepts and conflicts in a reflective and critical way.

Julia completed her BFA (Hons) in 2023 from Massey University Toi Rauwhārangi.

In 2023 she curated the exhibition “Off Cuts”, which critically addressed the brittle status quo of the education sector after the significant Budget Cuts by the government in 2023.

She most recently has shown her work at Exposure (2023) and is excited about fulfilling her role as one of the facilitators at the artist run space “Meanwhile” Gallery.
